Meet the Children

GGCC is home to over 480 children. The children are students in Kindergarten through tenth grade. (80% are orphans, often depending upon older siblings, extended family or neighbors for sustenance.) They are among the poorest on the island. Before coming to GGCC many are sick, neglected or have been abused.

Children who are selected to attend GGCC are the poorest in the region. They are selected by eight vetting committees on Mfangano Island who know the neediest children. It is a privilege to attend and all who are chosen are grateful.  They excel in their education, grow physically and mentally, and develop visions for their future. Many come to know Jesus as Savior and Lord.

Jane, a student at GGCC, expresses the gratitude felt by the students in this excerpt from her poem, Gethsemane: the Future of Mfangano.
“GGCC, a home to the homeless and helpless.
When we were in darkness you brought us life.
When we were destitute, you gave us a destiny.
Oh! Gethsemane, you turned our lacks to abundance.”

Benard O

GGCC323

Bernard is the youngest of six children.  He and his siblings live with their mother, an elderly widow, in a mud-walled hut with a tin roof.  Because they have no money for basic necessities or education, only one of Bernard’s brothers attends school; the others fish, farm , burn charcoal and sell firewood to support the family.  Bernard enjoys Christian Religious Education and would like to be a teacher when he finishes school.  God “raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap”. (Psalm 113:7)

Lillian

GGCC449

Lillian lives with her mother and three siblings.  Her father died after suffering from chest pain and a swollen stomach.  Her mother has no source of income and is unable to support her children.  They sleep on mats on the floor with no mosquito net for protection.  Lillian joined GGCC  in 2009 as a third grade student.  “He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me”. (Psalm 18:19)

Calvince O

GGCC465

Both of Calvince’s parents died, so he lives with his elderly grandparents.  His grandmother is a peasant farmer and brews “changa”, an illegal brew.  His grandfather is a weaver and makes baskets to support Calvince and their other grandchildren.  Calvince joined GGCC in 2009 as a fifth grade student. “By this I know, that God is for me”. (Psalm 56:9)

Meroline A.

GGCC479

Meroline’s mother died in 2008, and she lives with her father who is often too sick to work.  When he is able, he fishes to support the family.  Meroline’s father needs salvation to free him from his spiritual and physical poverty.  Meroline joined GGCC in 2009 as a first grade student.  Now God has become Jehovah Jireh, the Provider, in a real way to Meroline. “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods”. (Psalm 63:3, 5)
