School Life at GGCC
GGCC is currently home to over 480 students in grades K-10. The school provides housing, three meals a day, clothing and shoes, and a quality Christian education. The school charter established that a minimum of 60% of students must be orphans.
Students at GGCC study math, science, language arts, history, Christian education and other traditional subjects. Classes are conducted in English, and students can read and speak it well. They also study Swahili, the national language, and Suba, their heart language. The Bible is one of their textbooks. Students consistently perform well, excelling at district and national levels. Students are thankful for their education and see it as key to their future.
During the school day students enjoy many activities. They have a playground donated by United Faith Christian Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition to classrooms and dorms, the campus includes a bathhouse, four story multipurpose building, library, computer lab, science lab, offices, and staff housing. A guesthouse and kitchen/dining facility are located near the main campus.
Students attend class for three terms of three months each, with a one month break between terms. During these breaks students return to their home village and stay with a family member or guardian to maintain their family roots. Life can be harsh in Kenya during times of adverse weather when crops are scarce. For this and other reasons, during school breaks GGCC staff visit all students who are orphans to determine if any have special needs.
The students enjoy soccer, volleyball, jumping rope and other sports. They have daily song and prayer time and are assigned chores such as washing clothes, gardening or carrying supplies.
Approximately 60 staff members care for the students while they are at GGCC. These include teachers, teacher assistants, house parents, grounds workers, administrative workers and kitchen staff. Many of the staff live on the campus and spend extra time with their students. GGCC was founded by Naphtaly and Nereah Mattah who serve as Director and Principal of the school.
